What To Look For In The Best Hamster Cages
When choosing the right hamster cage for your little pet, you’ll need to understand a few things that ensure your hamster has a good life. If your hamster is placed in the wrong type of cage then they will be unhealthy and this can leas to behavioral problems, which can in turn lead to difficultly in looking after them.
Size
Just like you and me, your hamster doesn’t want to be living in a cramped space the whole of their life. They need space to run around and feel free, rather than being cooped up somewhere with no place to go. Experts say that if you have a larger hamster, especially a Syrian hamster, that it is very important each one has no less than 150 square inches of floor space and 17.5 inches of vertical space to move around in. If you own a smaller breed, they should have 120 square inches of floor space and 7 inches of vertical space.
The minimum requirements for cage dimensions are recommended to be 30 inches by 15 inches by 15 inches, set out by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Material
Two of the most popular hamster cage materials are wire and plastic. Wire topped hamster cages should always have a plastic bottom because a wired bottom can be dangerous for your hamsters little feet. The space between the wires should never be bigger than half a centimeter as smaller hamsters can actually poke their head through the bars. Wire cages are advantageous because they allow your hamster to climb the walls and explore.
Plastic cages are often preferred by hamster owners because they are easier to clean and they give you a constant view of your hamster. They can also be considered safer because you know your hamster will not be escaping through the bars. However, they do not give your hamster any means to climb the sides of the cage, so you will need to provide accessories for your pet.
Living Space
The living space and the size of the cage are actually two different things. While you may have a hamster cage that fits the standard dimensions needed for your furry friend, it is not going to be much fun for them if they don’t actually have space to live. Hamsters are very active and curious animals and need wheels, tunnels and and mazes to run around in and explore. However, if their whole cage is taken up with these things, they are not going to have any space to actually live and they will become distressed and upset and will ultimately not live a happy life.
Bedding Depth
The depth at the bottom of the hamster cage is a very important aspect to consider. Hamsters love to dig and you should always put a minimum of two inches worth of bedding down at the bottom of their cage. The more the better. This is why you should take special note of the depth of the bottom of the cage, especially if you are buying a wire-top cage. You will want enough space for bedding that your hamster can dig into without pushing too much through the wire above the plastic area.
Ease of Cleaning
if your hamster cage is not easy to clean, then your room (or the room you keep them in) is going to smell very bad after a while. The more complex the cage is to set up, the harder it is to clean. As we mentioned above, plastic cages are often favored over wire cages because of their ease of cleaning, but that being said, wire cages with only a plastic bottom are also easy to clean. The more items you have in the cage (such as tunnels and exercise wheels) the more difficult the cage is going to clean — but your hamster needs these things so don’t skimp on them!
Ventilation
Simply put, if your hamster cage doesn’t have enough ventilation, then your hamster is going to suffocate. Wire cages have fantastic ventilation because the only part of the cage that is covered is the bottom plastic part. If you choose a plastic cage, you need to make sure there are windows or ventilation holes to make sure there is air flowing through.
Security
Hamsters are one of the smallest pets that humans keep, and, because of this, their cages need to be extra secure and safe. This is because their body parts can get stuck between the wires of they can unlock the door on the cage without realizing. Hamsters are often known for chewing and some breeds of hamsters are known to love chewing on the wire bars of their cage. Therefore, you need to make sure that their new home is extra safe for them.
Exercise Wheels
Exercise wheels are known to be the most popular toy for pet hamsters and it is recommended that you have one in your hamster’s cage. They are one of the safest toys and do not have any parts that your hamster could get their paws stuck in. They also give them great exercise. Experts recommend getting a hamster wheel with a solid surface and the wheel diameter should be lightly bigger than the body and length of your hamster.
Types Of Hamster Cages
We briefly mentioned two types of hamster cages above — wire and plastic — but now you know what to look for in a hamster cage, we can go into more detail about the types of hamster cages out there for you to choose from and their benefits.
Wire-Top
A wire-top cage has a wire structure with a plastic bottom. These are the most traditional hamster cages and allow great ventilation. They are also easy to clean and you can see and access your hamster very easily. However, many hamsters love to chew on the wire bars and wire cages may not be the most secure, especially if your hamster is very small and is able to poke their head between the bars. Bedding can also be pushed through the bars and onto the floor, creating a bigger mess for you to clean up.
Plastic Tank
Plastic tank cages are very secure and allow you to see your pet very easily. These cages often come pre-made with all the accessories such as tunnels and wheels, making them very efficient and easy for a first time hamster-parent. You can also fill the cage with as much bedding as you need to and not worry about it being pushed outside of the cage like with wire-top cages. The downside to plastic tanks is the cleaning; with all the accessories they can be difficult to disassemble and reassemble when cleaning and you may not be able to get to your hamster if they are hiding in the middle of a tunnel in the middle of the cage. Ventilation is also sometimes a worry with plastic cages and you will need to make sure that there are windows or holes so your hamster always has air.
Aquarium or Glass Tank
Aquarium or glass tank cages can either be re-purposed aquariums or specially built glass cages. They can come both with and without a lid. They allow you to see your hamster at all times and give you easy access to them too. Glass tanks are easy to clean as well and you can put at much bedding as needed without worrying that it is going to fall out. Glass cages are chew-proof and very secure, so you don’t need to worry about your hamster getting loose. However, these tanks can be very heavy.
How Much Do The Best Hamster Cages Cost?
Hamster cages do not actually cost very much, but, of course, there are pet owners who buy the mot expensive living spaces for their furry friends. There are five different aspects of hamster cages that with affect how much the overall cost of the cage is. These five different things can range form very cheap to very expensive, depending on how much you want to spend.
Cage
If you want to do things cheaply, you can make a hamster cage out of pretty much anything as long as it is a safe and suitable environment for your pet. However, if you want a ready made hamster cage, you could be spending anywhere between $10 to $100, depending on it’s size, material and accessories.
Bedding
Your hamster will rest, sleep and dig in their bedding so it is a very important part of the cage. Bedding is normally very cheap, around $2 a pack, although you can get more expensive bedding that is better quality. The important thing to remember with bedding is that you will be changing it very often, so if you go for the more expensive bedding then you will end up spending a fair bit every month.
Dish
You will need a dish in the cage to feed your hamster with. It should be durable and something they cannot bite or nibble, so a ceramic dish would be best. You can buy these for around $10. If you want to get a plastic bowl, these will cost you around $5.
Bottle
Of course, your hamster will need a water bottle to drink from. This could be a water bowl, but these can be messier and less hygienic for your pet. A water bottle should cost you around $5, or you can find a cheaper plastic bowl.
Other Accessories
If you make your own hamster cage or you buy one bare, you can expect to pay anywhere between $5 and $20 for other accessories. These other accessories include “fun” things such as tunnels and mazes for your hamster to play in. They can be made out of recycle household objects too, if you don’t want to spend any money. However, often when you buy a ready-built hamster cage, the cage already has these accessories inside so you do not need to worry about buying any extras.

How To Set Up A Hamster Cage
Once you have purchased your hamster cage, you’ll need to set it up before your furry friend moves in. First of all, you need to choose a location for the hamster home. This should be somewhere at a comfortable temperature — preferably room temperature. Hamsters can be very active in the night so your bedroom is not always a good idea. Wherever you put them, make sure it is not a loud place because they have very sensitive hearing.
Next you will need to lay the bedding down. Remember, there should be no less than 2 inches of bedding at the bottom of your hamster’s cage, so they have plenty of space to dig and it is also thick enough to absorb any smell of urine. Then you can start adding the accessories, such as the wheel, the tunnels and the food and water bowls. Remember to leave enough space for your hamster to actually “live in” too. Once this is all your done, your pet is ready to move in!
Best Hamster Cages FAQ’s
What do hamsters need in their cage?
There are a few things that hamsters definitely need in their cage. The first is some bedding, because this is where they sleep, rest and burrow, and it is also very important for absorbing the smell of urine. Your hamster also needs a food bowl and a water bottle. They will also need some toys, such as a wheel, a tunnel or a maze, so they don’t get bored. Hamsters are very active animals so a life without these things would be very boring!
Are wire cages bad for hamsters?
Wire cages are not bad for hamsters, but like every other type of cage, they have their pros and cons. They are not as secure as plastic cages and your little pet could get their feet stuck between the wires. However, they are a very well ventilated living space for your pet and are easy to clean too.
Which hamster cage is best for a Syrian?
Syrian hamsters need a lot of air to survive because they have tiny lungs. Because of this, a wire cage is best for them. You should make sure you get one with a plastic bottom, to ensure their feet don’t get stuck in the wires.
Should I cover my hamster cage at night?
It is advised not to cover your hamster cage at night. Not only do they need a well ventilated space at all times, but they are also nocturnal animals, so covering their cage and keeping it dark will encourage them to stay awake. If you want them to sleep well, you can leave their cage uncovered.
