Notable Ten-Letter Animals
The Chimpanzee is humanity’s closest living relative, sharing around 98.7% of our DNA. Found in the forests and savannas of central and western Africa, chimpanzees are renowned for their intelligence, tool use, and complex social structures. They are classified as endangered, with wild populations declining due to habitat destruction and poaching.
The Rhinoceros is one of the largest land mammals, with five surviving species across Africa and Asia. The white rhinoceros can weigh up to 2,300 kg, while the Javan and Sumatran species are critically endangered with fewer than 80 individuals each. Their horns, made entirely of keratin, have tragically made them a prime target for poachers.
The Pufferfish is one of nature’s most extraordinary defence mechanisms. When threatened, it inflates itself by gulping water, becoming a spiny, near-impossible-to-eat ball. Many species carry tetrodotoxin, a poison 1,200 times more deadly than cyanide — yet in Japan, pufferfish (known as fugu) is considered a delicacy.
Every year on the plains of East Africa, over 1.5 million Wildebeest undertake the Great Migration, one of the most spectacular natural events on the planet. Travelling over 1,800 km between Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara, they face crocodile-infested rivers and waiting predators along the way.
The Chinchilla, native to the Andes mountains of South America, has the densest fur of any land mammal — approximately 20,000 hairs per square centimetre. Originally hunted nearly to extinction for the fur trade, chinchillas are now popular pets and are classified as endangered in the wild.
Other notable ten-letter animals include the Budgerigar (one of the world’s most popular pet birds), the Salamander (an amphibian capable of regrowing lost limbs), the Woodpecker (which can peck at tree trunks 20 times per second without brain injury), and the Kingfisher (whose diving technique inspired the design of Japan’s bullet train).
