Remarkable Nine-Letter Animals
The Crocodile is one of nature’s ultimate survivors, having existed for over 200 million years largely unchanged. Modern species include the fearsome saltwater crocodile, the largest living reptile, which can exceed 6 metres in length.
The Orangutan is our closest relative in Asia, sharing approximately 97% of our DNA. These critically endangered great apes are found only in the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra, where deforestation continues to shrink their habitat.
Few animals inspire as much wonder as the Blue Whale. At up to 30 metres long and weighing 150 tonnes, it is the largest animal ever to have lived on Earth — bigger even than the biggest dinosaurs.
The Chameleon is famous for its colour-changing skin, independently moving eyes, and projectile tongue that can extend to twice its body length. Over 200 species exist, mostly in Africa and Madagascar.
In the skies, the Bald Eagle reigns as America’s national symbol, with a wingspan reaching 2.3 metres. Once on the brink of extinction from DDT poisoning, its recovery is one of conservation’s greatest success stories.
Underground, the Groundhog (also known as the woodchuck) is famous in North American culture for its supposed weather-predicting abilities each February. Meanwhile, the Wolverine is pound-for-pound one of the fiercest animals alive, known to drive bears away from kills.
