4 Dogs with Black Tongues

Dogs with black tongues are not as rare as you might think. In fact, there are quite a few dog breeds that have black tongues. Some people might be surprised to learn that even some mix breed dogs can have black tongues.

While the Chow Chow and Chinese Shar-Pei are two of the most well-known dog breeds with black tongues, there are actually several other breeds that sport this unique feature.

Why do some dogs have black tongues?

Some dogs have black tongues because of their genes. This is a completely harmless condition and does not affect the dog’s health in any way. The black tongue is simply a result of pigment cells being present in the dog’s tongue.

While this may seem strange, it is actually quite common in many animals, including humans.

Chow Chow

The Chow Chow is a breed of dog that is known for its black tongue. This is a completely harmless condition and does not affect the dog’s health in any way. The black tongue is simply a result of pigment cells being present in the dog’s tongue.

Despite its unique look, the Chow Chow is a great family pet. They are loyal and protective, but also good with children. They do require some exercise, but are generally low energy dogs. Chow Chows are also known for being very clean dogs, and they rarely need to be bathed.

Chinese Shar-Pei

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a breed of dog that is known for its distinctive features. These dogs have a wrinkled skin that makes them look quite unique. They are also known for their loyalty and intelligence. Chinese Shar-Peis are considered to be excellent family dogs, and they are known for their patience with children.

The tongue is one of the most distinguishing features of the Chinese Shar-Pei. This breed of dog has a blue-black tongue that is said to be an indication of good health. The Shar-Pei’s tongue is also said to have healing properties.

The Chinese Shar-Pei is a medium-sized dog that typically weighs between 45 and 60 pounds. These dogs have a short coat. Shar-Peis are considered to be a low-maintenance breed, and they do not require a lot of grooming.

Miniature Shar-Pei

The Miniature Shar-Pei is a small, but sturdy dog that is known for its wrinkled skin. This breed is descended from the Chinese Shar-Pei, and was bred to be a smaller version of that dog. The Miniature Shar-Pei is a loyal and loving pet that is protective of its family. These dogs are intelligent and playful, and make great companions for families with children.

The Miniature Shar-Pei is an active breed that needs plenty of exercise, but can be content with a daily walk or playtime in the yard. This dog breed is not known for being yappy, but does bark when it feels its family is threatened.

Eurasier

The Eurasier is a relatively new breed of dog, originating in Germany in the 1970s. They are a spitz-type dog, and are bred to be companion animals. They are typically calm and even-tempered, making them great pets for families with children. Eurasiers are also very intelligent and easy to train, and they are known for being very loyal to their owners.

If you are looking for a loving and devoted family pet, the Eurasier may be the perfect breed for you!

Other Dogs with Black Tongues

Spotted or nearly black tongues are not uncommon among purebred dogs, although they aren’t required as breed standard unlike the Chow Chow or Shar-Pei.

German Shepherd

Dogs with dark or black points are more likely to have black spots on their tongues. The following dog breeds have dark points that might develop into black patches and spots on their tongues:

  • German Shepherd
  • Border Collie
  • Boxer
  • Bullmastiff

Mix Breed Dogs with Black Tongues

Pure purple-black tongues are occasionally seen in dogs mated with Chow-Chows and Chinese Shar-Pei dogs. The Boxer-Chow is a well-liked Chow mix because of its gentler energy and decreased aggressiveness.

Designer dog breeds like the Chow-Husky mix (Chusky) create headstrong, high-energy workaholics that have greater exercise requirements than purebred Chows.

There are several notable Chinese Shar-Pei dog mixtures that have been given “official” designer dog breeds, such as the Golden Pei. The temperament of a Golden Pei is similar to that of a Golden Retriever, but with the aggression of a Shar-Pei.

The Ori-Pei is a selective cross between the Pug and the Shar-Pei that was designed to reduce the health problems associated with both breeds.
