The Arabian is one of the oldest and most recognisable horse breeds in the world, with a history stretching back at least 4,500 years to the deserts of the Arabian Peninsula. Bred by Bedouin tribes for endurance, speed, and close companionship, the Arabian has influenced nearly every modern light horse breed and remains one of the most popular breeds globally.
Arabian Horse Characteristics
Arabians are immediately recognisable by their distinctive dished (concave) facial profile, large expressive eyes, arched neck, and high tail carriage. They are relatively compact, standing 14.1–15.1 hands (145–155 cm) and weighing 360–450 kg. Despite their smaller size, they possess exceptional bone density and stamina.
A unique anatomical feature sets the Arabian apart: most have only 17 ribs, 5 lumbar vertebrae, and 16 tail vertebrae, compared to 18, 6, and 18 respectively in other breeds. This skeletal difference contributes to their shorter back and distinctive silhouette.
Temperament and Behaviour
Arabians are renowned for their intelligence, loyalty, and willingness to bond with humans. Centuries of close living with Bedouin families — often sharing tents — have produced a breed that is uniquely people-oriented. They are alert and quick to learn, though their sensitivity means they respond best to patient, respectful handling.
Uses and Disciplines
The Arabian’s extraordinary stamina makes it the dominant breed in endurance riding, regularly covering 160 km in a single day. They also excel in showing, dressage, trail riding, and ranch work. Arabian bloodlines have been foundational in creating breeds including the Thoroughbred, the Anglo-Arabian, and the Lipizzaner.
Health and Lifespan
Arabians are a hardy breed with a typical lifespan of 25–30 years, with many living well into their 30s. They are prone to a few genetic conditions including Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID), Cerebellar Abiotrophy (CA), and Lavender Foal Syndrome, though genetic testing has helped breeders reduce these conditions significantly.
