Belgian Draft Horse

By Joanne Spencer · Updated 17 April 2026

Belgian Draft Horse

The Belgian Draft is the most popular draft horse breed in the United States and one of the strongest horses in the world. Originating in the Brabant region of Belgium, this breed was the engine of European agriculture for centuries. American breeders developed a slightly taller, lighter version of the original Brabant, and the modern Belgian Draft combines tremendous pulling power with a remarkably gentle temperament.

Belgian Draft Characteristics

Belgian Drafts are massive horses standing 16–18 hands (163–183 cm) and weighing 820–1,000 kg. The world record for the tallest living horse was held by a Belgian named Big Jake, who stood 20.3 hands (210 cm). They have a relatively small, refined head for their body size, a short muscular neck, wide chest, and powerful hindquarters. In the US, the most common colour is chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail, while European Brabants are often bay or roan.

Temperament and Behaviour

Belgian Drafts are famous for their docile, patient, and willing temperament. Despite their enormous size, they are among the gentlest of all horse breeds. They are easy to train, eager to work, and tolerant of noise and commotion. Their calm nature makes them excellent for therapeutic riding programmes and public demonstration work.

Strength and Uses

The Belgian Draft holds multiple pulling records. A pair of Belgians in 1924 pulled an estimated 7,711 kg (17,000 lbs) of dead weight. Modern Belgians are used in competitive pulling, logging, farm work, carriage driving, and riding. The Budweiser Clydesdales’ closest competitor in the public consciousness, teams of Belgians can be seen at fairs, parades, and agricultural shows across North America.

Health and Lifespan

Belgians typically live 18–24 years. Like other draft breeds, they can be susceptible to junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB), a fatal genetic skin condition in foals. Polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM), chronic progressive lymphoedema, and laminitis are also concerns. Responsible breeders use genetic testing to screen for hereditary conditions.
