The Dutch Warmblood, registered as the KWPN (Koninklijk Warmbloed Paardenstamboek Nederland), is one of the most successful sport horse breeds in the world. Despite being one of the youngest warmblood registries, founded in 1970, the KWPN has risen to dominate international show jumping and dressage rankings through an intensely performance-focused breeding programme. Dutch breeders pioneered the approach of selecting strictly for athletic ability and rideability, and the results speak for themselves.
Dutch Warmblood Characteristics
Dutch Warmbloods stand 15.3–17 hands (160–173 cm) and weigh 490–590 kg. They are modern sport horses with an athletic build: a quality head, long neck, well-angled shoulders, strong back, and powerful hindquarters. The KWPN has three distinct breeding directions, dressage, jumping, and harness (the Tuigpaard), each with different conformation goals but shared quality standards.
Temperament and Behaviour
Rideability is a core selection criterion for the KWPN. Dutch Warmbloods are bred to be cooperative, trainable, and brave. Their temperament testing includes assessments of willingness, character, and suitability for the intended discipline. The result is a horse that is typically bold enough for top-level competition while remaining manageable for skilled amateur riders.
Competitive Success
The KWPN regularly tops the WBFSH world rankings for both dressage and jumping breeding. Famous KWPN horses include Valegro (dressage world record holder and double Olympic champion), Hickstead (show jumping legend), and Moorlands Totilas (the horse that rewrote dressage scoring). No other breed registry has produced champions of this calibre across multiple disciplines in such a short time.
Health and Lifespan
Dutch Warmbloods typically live 25–30 years. The KWPN’s rigorous inspection system includes veterinary screening, which has helped reduce the incidence of hereditary unsoundness. Like all performance horses, they can be susceptible to soft tissue injuries and joint conditions related to their athletic careers. The studbook actively collects health and performance data to inform breeding decisions.
