The Hanoverian is one of the most successful sport horse breeds in the world. Developed in the German state of Lower Saxony (formerly the Kingdom of Hanover), the breed was originally created as an all-purpose horse for agriculture, carriage, and military use. Over the past century, careful selective breeding has transformed the Hanoverian into an elite athlete that dominates Olympic dressage, show jumping, and eventing.
Hanoverian Characteristics
Hanoverians are tall, athletic horses standing 15.3–17.2 hands (160–178 cm) and weighing 500–600 kg. They possess a noble head, long muscular neck, prominent withers, and powerful hindquarters. Their movement is elastic, ground-covering, and naturally balanced — qualities that are carefully evaluated through the breed’s rigorous inspection and performance testing system.
All solid colours are accepted, with bay, chestnut, black, and grey being most common. The breed is identified by a distinctive “H” brand on the left hip.
Temperament and Behaviour
Hanoverians are bred for rideability — a combination of willingness, trainability, and cooperative temperament. They are typically bold but sensible, with enough spirit for high-level competition and enough calm for amateur riders. Their even temperament and athletic ability make them one of the most sought-after breeds for competitive riders worldwide.
Competitive Success
Hanoverians have won more Olympic medals than any other warmblood breed. They consistently rank at the top of the World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses (WBFSH) rankings in dressage, jumping, and eventing. Famous Hanoverians include Salinero (double Olympic dressage gold), Shutterfly (world-class show jumper), and Butts Abraxxas (eventing champion).
Health and Lifespan
Hanoverians typically live 25–30 years. The breed society’s rigorous testing regime — including veterinary inspections, movement evaluations, and performance tests — helps maintain soundness across the breed. Osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) can occur, and the breed society collects data on health traits to improve breeding decisions.
