The Paso Fino is a naturally gaited breed with roots tracing back to the horses brought to the Americas by Spanish Conquistadors in the 16th century. The name means “fine step” in Spanish, referring to the breed’s signature four-beat lateral gait, a smooth, rhythmic movement that is completely natural and never trained. Developed primarily in Puerto Rico, Colombia, and other Latin American countries, the Paso Fino has gained a devoted following worldwide for its incredible smoothness and showy presence.
Paso Fino Characteristics
Paso Finos stand 13.2–15.2 hands (137–157 cm) and weigh 360–450 kg. They are refined and elegant, with a straight or slightly convex facial profile, arched neck, short strong back, and rounded hindquarters. All colours are found including bay, chestnut, black, grey, palomino, buckskin, and pinto. Their build reflects their Spanish ancestry, with the compact power of the Barb and the refinement of the Andalusian.
The breed’s signature gait comes in three speeds: the classic fino (slow, collected, and precise), the paso corto (moderate, ground-covering), and the paso largo (fast, extended). At all speeds, the gait remains smooth and four-beat, with the rider experiencing virtually no vertical movement.
Temperament and Behaviour
Paso Finos are spirited, proud, and energetic, yet responsive and willing under saddle. Their natural “brio”, an eagerness and controlled energy, is a prized breed characteristic. They are alert and flashy in the show ring but sensible and surefooted on the trail. Their desire to please and their natural gait make them comfortable and confidence-building mounts.
Health and Lifespan
Paso Finos typically live 25–30 years. They are generally hardy and sound, though a hereditary condition called Degenerative Suspensory Ligament Desmitis (DSLD) has been identified in some bloodlines, causing progressive lameness. Genetic research is ongoing to develop screening tests. Otherwise, the breed is robust and easy to maintain.
