Yorkipoo dogs are very special dogs. They fall into a group known as “designer dogs” or mixed breed dogs. This particular breed are a mix between a Yorkshire terrier and a poodle.
They are very small dogs in general, but with an average weight between 4-17 pounds full grown, there can be quite a difference between individual dogs. Depending on the size of the parents Yorkipoos’ are normally between 7-15 inches. These dogs originated in the United States and are a very cute almost ewok-like dog.
Characteristics and Appearance
Yorkipoos are one of the smallest and sweetest of the mixed breeds today. They have a coat that is open with a very wavy texture, and they do have some moderate shedding and low allergies. These dogs come in a variety of different colors depending on the combination of the coloring of the parents. They come in gray, apricot, black and tan, chocolate, black, sable, silver, red, and cream. They are also occasionally a variant of these colors combined and can almost appear to be a sort of calico of dogs.
They can inherit a variety of different traits from their parents. Poodles for example, range in size depending in whether they are toy, miniature or standard poodles. So the parent poodle can directly impact the size of their yorkipoo pup. Poodles are also considered one of the most intelligent dog breeds, and so their mix breed pup very often inherits this intelligence too.
Grooming
Yorkipoos are a hypoallergenic dog breed due to their lack of undercoat and lessened shedding.
The Yorkipoo has a very friendly bear-like face, with close set eyes, and oftentimes a very vacant simple stare. This breed is moderately high maintenance, needing grooming and frequent trims to keep their coat manageable. These dogs have a lifespan of about 10-15 years as do most smaller dogs. Yorkipoos’ are fairly good with children requiring some supervision, and have a medium activity level. This breed was developed in the interest of all the many poodle crossbreeds.
Owning a Yorkipoo
Yorkipoo dogs, like any other dog have personalities and mannerisms that reflect their respective owners behavior and treatment of their dog. Yorkipoos can be the finest dog you will ever have and a lifelong friend. Yorkipoo dogs are also a huge responsibility both physically , emotionally as well as financially.
Before buying a Yorkie poo be sure to have all its shots in mind as well as all the love, care, and maintenance your new pup will require before buying one. Please do not try breeding a Yorkipoo puppy unless you are a trained experienced breeder.
Poor breeding habits lead to unwanted, unhealthy and uncared for dogs.
Behaviour
They can be a little difficult for first time dog owners as they can be quite stubborn, but their social tendencies and intelligence means they are a good match with families.
While they are great for families, the mix breed can be a little standoffish with other dogs. They need continued socialization with other dogs or pets so they learn how to play with them properly. The same goes with children — often children can be rough with dogs and due to the Yorkipoo’s size this can be dangerous for them.
This breed loves to play and is a very active dog. They will particularly like to accompany you on hikes and runs and want to join in all the fun with the family. The Yorkie has a high prey drive and this can sometimes be passed down to the Yorkipoo. Training them properly and ensuring they don’t run off while you are outside is very important!
They need constant attention and can be quite demanding. These dogs can also settle well in an apartment setting.
Yorkipoo health problems and concerns
Some potential health problems that are concurrent with this breed are as follows:
- Patella Luxation
- Eye Problems
- Liver Shunts
- Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease
- Hip Dysplasia
Yorkipoo dogs are usually good designer dogs for children and animals alike. An aggression test may be given before buying a pup. Check the parents background too before buying one of these dogs. Genetics are only a part of it though, a yorkipoo needs special love and attention. Keep this in mind so your new friend will grow up healthy and friendly.
