Spirit animals are not physical beings in our tangible world, but rather symbolic representations, energies that resonate with our innermost personalities, qualities, and experiences. They are mirrors into our souls, reflecting our strengths and our challenges alike. For those that believe, spirit animals guide us through our path in life, offering unique lessons, wisdom, and a connection to parts of ourselves that we may not know exist.

Cultural Reverence of Spirit Animals
The concept of spirit animals is found across the whole of human history; it is a universal phenomenon, deeply rooted in various cultures around the globe. The Native Americans, for instance, hold a profound connection with nature and believe in totems, animal emblems representing tribes or individuals, each imparting significant life teachings and wisdom.
On the other side of the globe in the distant lands of Siberia, the shamans place immense value on the spirit realm, considering spirit animals as protectors and guides, essential for the well-being of their communities. Meanwhile, the Aboriginal Australians hold a sacred belief in ‘Dreamtime,’ where spirit animals are not mere symbolic entities but ancestors who roamed the Earth, creating life and forming the terrain.
They are found in the cultures and histories across Asia and Europe too, from Chinese to Norse to Celtic, each with their own deep rooted history and connection to animals.
Spirit Animals and the Zodiac: A Cosmic Connection?
The classical Greek/Western Zodiac, is an ancient celestial cycle, represents the sun’s path across the heavens. It is believed by astrologers to influence human affairs and terrestrial occurrences. Like spirit animals, many zodiac signs, have animal representations intrinsic to their meanings. However, the connection between spirit animals and the zodiac is more symbolic than direct.
The Chinese Zodiac is different to the Greek Zodiac, in that it is split across a 12 yearly cycle but it too has a connection to spirit animals. Each year in the cycle is represented by a different animal, with people born in the ‘year of rabbit’ or ‘year of the horse’ for example.
While spirit animals are personal guides tied to our inner selves, zodiac signs are celestial influences determined by our birth time and date. For instance, an individual with the Aries zodiac sign might find a ram as their symbol, indicative of leadership and confidence, but their spirit animal could be entirely different, perhaps a bear, symbolizing introspection and strength, depending on their personal journey and inner needs.
In these posts, we will explore the many different spirit animals, their meaning and their significance in different cultures. There will also be posts showing the significance between different zodiac signs and spirit animals.
